Got A New Work PC – I Hate Vista

So I finally got a new work PC because my old PC is 5 years old and was getting pretty clunky. We ordered a new one, and unfortunately, I have to stick with Vista.

Now, computers are a tool for me. I am not an OS worshipper of any sort, but you know, when I got my Mac, it was unadulterated joy akin to reclining on a couch, popping packing bubbles while someone feeds me bacon.

When I got my PC, I got it to install some updates. These updates took over an hour to install and it was 70 megs. Could I surf at that time? No, I couldn’t, it was worse than dialup speed.

And now, three hours later, I’m still having problems with internet speed. Admittedly, I don’t know what could be wrong. It could be Vista. It could be Dell. It could be the wireless router. But other machines in my house work fine (and currently, there are five other ones).

So, I scour the internet at a speed that makes me glance over to see if the phone is still in the cradle of the modem, and I find things like:

– Uninstall McAfee – It’s phishing tool slows it down (don’t have this junk virus program installed)
– Disable phishing for IE7 (did that)
– Turn off IPv6 (it broke things)
– Turn off TCP Auto Tuning (this was a big one. I also had to figure out how to run as admin in cmd)
– Update firmware on router (latest firmware, but router is old)
– Uninstall Dell Remote Access Programs (I just went and uninstalled everything Dell had installed)
– Change the power setting to maximum for the wireless (did that to further my environmental terrorist plans)

Just to make sure I’m not on Vista Hate rampage, I did an internet speed test. One from an old laptop on wireless, the other on Vista:

Old Useless Laptop: 5849 Kbps Download | 510 Kbps Upload
New Useless Vista: 108 Kbps Download | 508 Kbps Upload

Good to see upload isn’t affected. And no, I didn’t miss a zero in those above stats.

I hate Vista.

Still looking for a solution to this problem.
